Exit the wimpy leader

1. Afraid to be open about things
Wimpy leader is not comfortable with sharing information with others. He communicates in such a subtle and obtuse manner His message is so vague  that people miss or misinterpret it. He is afraid to be open because he views people one suspious lot.

2. Avoiding addressing disciplinary issues
Wimpy leader approaches it in an irresolute and wavering manner. He closes an eye to breaches of disciplines, which may include lack of punctuality, abuse of medical leave, procrastination in work and non-compliance of company rules and regulations. Wimpy leader is often good at playing the "good guy" and does not want to be the person to confront his staff about discipline.

3. Take no risk
Wimpy leader is a risk adverse person. He analyses the risks and understand the implications and then takes no further action. His staff could come up with an innovative way of distributing the company products faster and cheaper, but he will ignore it as long as there is risk involved.

4. Hiding under the cloak of management
Wimpy leader's modt common argument against changes is :" i would like to implement those changes, but i am afraid management would not agree wit it". He would argue that he has no authority to make those changes. He does nothing to sell, persuade and cajole the top of good ideas proposed by his team.

5. Does not utilise power
One of the great complaints of the wimpy leader is that he does not have the power to get things done. To make change happen, one has to first utilise whatever authority one has and start to make things happen within the realm of one's power. The wimpy leader does not even use his authority to make things happen within his department.

6. Slow to take on more responsibilities.
Wimpy leader is not an achiever because he does not go after more responsibilities. The behaviour of avoiding responsibilities is quite apparent in the wimpy leafer as he will not voluteer to take on new projects, tasks or roles, often pretending to be busy in other non-significant things.

7. Shy and lacks confidence
From a psychological aspect, the wimpy leader is a shy person who lacks confidence. His idea of humility is that people should view him as insignificant and that his role is neither critical nor important to the company. He often speaks in a soft tone where people have difficulty hearing him. He does not behave in socialising and the importance of building relationships.

8. Embracing the status quo
Wimpy leader's mind is trapped by the status quo. He finds it hard to detach from current practices. He shuns anythings new, innovative and untested. He pays lip service to the need to change due to pressure, but deep down, he does not believe in it.

In essence, the challenges facing most wimpy leaders are not skills, knowledge or competencies, it is their mindsets. It is critical to address this issue as in essence, "business dont't fail, but leaders do". Exit the wimpy leader and enter the courageous leader to start the positive change anf growth that companies need today.
